Frequently Asked Questions

What should I bring to class?

We provide special swim diapers, towels, changing pads, and massage oil for infant massage instruction. All you need is your usual diaper bag supplies and your baby! It is recommended that you bring the necessities to feed your baby as they may want to eat before, during, or after class.

At what age do you recommend coming to metta baby classes?!

In short answer - the earlier the better !! Please see specific classes for our recommended age ranges. Most of our classes are specifically curated to meeting the developmental and educational needs of babies 0 to 6 months. What we hear often from our parents is “I wish we would have come sooner!”. We also want to promote early postpartum support and interaction for our parents which is why we recommend the earlier the better!

Can we bring siblings and younger guests?

Although we love those sweet older siblings, no guests or family members under the age of 15-years-old will be allowed to visit our studio during class. This is a rule that will be strictly enforced, as cleanliness and safety are the top priorities at metta baby. We want this experience to be special one on one time for both caregivers and their babies.

What exactly happens during a typical session?

We’re glad you asked! We have outlined a typical session here.

What is your policy on recording sessions?

Pictures and SHORT videos of your own baby are welcome. Full recording of class, including the massage instruction is NOT allowed. We do not allow FaceTime, Facebook Live and Instagram Live during sessions. Phones are great but they can become very distracting to our babies and staff. We must keep a low stimulation and quiet environment for our small friends. Our goal is to promote love, bonding & nurturing touch with your infant. We encourage you to “unplug” for the hour and enjoy this special one on one time with your baby.

How often do you recommend coming to metta baby?

You may notice benefits of sessions right away and throughout the rest of the day when attending class just one time. However as with most things, long term benefits come with regular attendance. We recommend coming once a week or as much as desired to see consistent and long term benefits. Most babies enjoy and can tolerate the full session the first visit, but if it is not “their day” the first time, it may take the second time to feel completely comfortable with the new environment & stimulation. Our experts will guide you and let you know if we think baby needs a break during their class time.

Do you sell your baby floats for in home use?

We do not sell our floats and do not recommend third party floats for in home use. Our custom bath tubs are extra deep to ensure baby cannot kick off of the bottom of the tub. We recommend that babies are professionally supervised with trained staff when participating in the water movement exercise.

How many visitors may attend class with my baby?

We allow TWO guests per baby during classes. This includes families of multiples.

Can I book a private class? Book with a friend?

Private classes can be booked upon request (at an increased rate) via email info@mettababy.com. Friends with three or more families can be booked via email at info@mettababy.com

How long is each session?

metta baby studio time is typically a one-hour interactive session. This includes experience time, time for feeding, and time for parents to socialize.

How should I schedule my baby’s feeding around class?

We understand that many babies are not on a schedule and that is ok! We do however recommend that your baby is fed within an hour of your class time. It is also common and usually recommended that your baby eats at some point during or after class (before their next nap). Water movement is a gentle form of exercise for your baby so it is very common for them to be much hungrier after their session and even throughout the rest of the day. Keep in mind these are just recommendations. Baby is the boss during their session and we will always try to tweak their session based on how they are feeling that day.

How long should we wait until after my baby has been circumcised/received immunizations?

We encourage you to join our water movement session once the circumcision is fully heeled, usually around 10 days or so after the procedure has been complete. We recommend waiting 24 hours to attend a session after immunizations have been given.

I’ve never heard of a baby floating class.

Infant Wellness Studios are a fairly newer concept throughout the US but certainly not in other parts of the world. Baby Spas throughout the US, UK, Europe, Asia, Australia and many other countries have been benefitting infants & families overseas for years. We could not be more excited to bring this practice to the Chicagoland and surrounding areas !

What if my baby cries?

This is one of our most asked questions. Our answer--Of course they may, because that’s what babies to do!  We understand that this is one of the most stressful situations for parents, but this is one of the ways babies communicate. Our Infant Specialists will try our best, with a “team approach,” to look for those unique cues to help figure out what your baby needs and the best ways to soothe them.  There is no need to feel flustered and embarrassed or pressured to step away if your sweet pea is having “a moment.”  We pride ourselves on being a welcoming and judgment-free support group for families and we ask that all participating friends respect this.
